On May 21, Ottawa was hit by a 190km/h derecho. A derecho is a widespread, long-lived, straight-line windstorm that is associated with a fast-moving group of severe thunderstorms. Only lasting about 6min, winds were equivalent to an EF-2 Tornado. This video, captured by drone as we assist the city with damage assessment and resource allocation, depicts the destructive effect the derecho had on large areas of trees and farming infrastructure.
Our thoughts are with those in the harder-hit areas still recovering from the derecho’s destructive path.
